In 1921, at the age of 17, Wu Qichang entered the Wuxi National Studies Institute, studied Confucian classics and Neo Confucianism in the Song and Ming Dynasties under the guidance of Tang Wenzhi, and began his academic career. With talent and agility, Wang Qichang and Tang Lan are collectively known as the "Three Great Experts of the National Academy". Every time I am on vacation, I will enter the public and private libraries with cooking cakes and stay there for three years. When I was in Wuxi National College, I lamented that the state affairs were not good and wrote to the government in thousands of words. Tang Wenzhi greatly rewarded Du Fu for saying, "Don't mourn for Wu Sheng's sword, I can defeat Yu Sailei." In October 1923, he published his first academic paper, A Brief History of Zhu Zi's Classics, in the 22nd issue of Xueheng magazine. It was about 20000 words long and he was only 19 years old. In the same year, he taught in Guangxi Rongxian Middle School and helped his younger siblings to study. Later, he transferred to the Zhou family in Tianjin as a teacher
